Urgent: Support Affordable Workforce Housing Now

The challenge

Our North Coast Community is struggling to house the working members of our community. Teachers, fire-fighters, librarians, and tradespeople cannot find a place to live, and businesses have trouble hiring anyone from out of area due to lack of housing.

Doing the right thing

Clatsop county has generously offered more than 12 acres of surplus land in the community of Arch Cape. A non-profit, North Coast Housing Solutions, has submitted a proposal to build 50 units of affordable workforce housing to benefit the entire north coast community.

The problem

Unfortunately, this project risks being shut down by a small group of local property owners in Arch Cape. They are writing to the Clatsop County Commissioners to drown the project in red tape.

We need your help now

Please take a few minutes to write a note or short letter to the Clatsop County Commissioners expressing your support for affordable workforce housing.

Please submit your letter by January 24th via this webform (type into text box or upload letter) https://www.clatsopcounty.gov/county/page/public-comment

Thank you for writing a letter!

In addition to highlighting any personal challenges that you, your acquaintances, or business owners you know have experienced finding affordable housing, feel free to include any of the talking points below:

Talking points

  • Our local workers are priced out of living on the north coast. Even someone earning $40,000-60,000 a year has challenges finding a stable place to live.

  • Our local businesses are having trouble hiring anyone who does not already have housing. Newly hired employees back out, or leave after a few months, when they can’t find a place to live.

  • This property in Arch Cape is perhaps the last remaining parcel large enough to build 50 units of affordable housing, and out of the flood plain, both requirements to accept state funding to support the project.

  • Clatsop county is far behind our neighbors to the south in Tillamook and Lincoln counties, who are both taking bold steps to build affordable workforce housing.

  • The proposed affordable workforce housing development in Arch Cape is a win-win for our community. It will provide much needed housing for our local workers, while also having minimal impact on the surrounding ecosystem.

Thank you for supporting this critical affordable workforce housing project to keep our community strong.
